THE MUSIC OF »ART BLAKEY AND THE JAZZ MESSENGERS«
Art Blakey and the Jazz Massengers was known as »The Institute of Higher Education«, which through historical development of jazz, with beginning in late 50's, created a revolution. Art loved SWING, and he was able to create most unusual »groove«.
Billy Harper says: »When I was playing with Art, his style asked of of me everything. He made me play as if it was the last time.«
Reggie Workman and Billy Harper worked with Art Blakey in different periods (Also Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Wynon Marsalis and many others)
THE MUSIC OF ERIC DOLPHY
Like his mentor and frequent playing companion John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy continued to inspire musicians and influences the course of jazz well into the third decade following his death. Eric Dolphy is a virtuoso on Alto saxophone. On flute and bass clarinet he is one of the first jazz musicians who has achieved that high level of technical and spiritual playing. Reggie Workman has played with Eric Dolphy in the group with John Coltrane.
INSTRUMENTS: INDIVIDUAL LESSONS (20 to 30 minutes)
Professors will be able to analize the playing technique of each individual student, comment their interpretation and encourage the creative approach in playing and composing (ask for the sign up list)
CLINICS (1 hour – three dates to be determined):
R. Workman: Historical development of Jazz - Women in Jazz
B. Harper: Experiences of past 35 years with Art Blakey, Gil Evans, Max Roach
J. Owens: The Music Industry
Professors will speak mainly from their own experience. A debate to be encouragged.
ENSEMBLES (daily 2 hours):
Workman, Harper, Owens, Bezget, Hammond, Burke, Ikawa, Krečič - assistant
After the placement meeting (on August 10th at 7 pm) the participants will be selected into different ensembles. During ensemble classes participants will be playing most important compositions from Arts Blakey Jazz Messengers, Eric Dolphy, and compositions composed by professors and students (arangements from students should be pre-planned). Vocalists will be divided according to their experiences. They will be encouragged to write their own lirics.
BIG BAND (daily 2,5 hours): Workman, Owens, Bezget, Krečič
Placement in Big Band will be determined by audition on the first day of classes. The main focus of the program will be the music of Eric Dolphy and original compositions. Big Band will be featured at the final concert at SNG Maribor.
IMPROVISED MOVEMENT, VISUAL ARTS, LIVE SOUND, DIGITAL CAMERA
(4 days for 2 hours):
Maya M. Workman, Igor Bezget, Lenart Krečič, Kevin Jones and guests – musicians)
Sound causes reaction. If we stand in space where there is silence, we hear the sound. We are interested how does the improvised sound affects the movement. Can this utmost exchange bring us to the point of complition?
WORKSHOP FOR THE DEAF (1-2 times, dates to be announced):
Maya Milenović Workman, Reggie Workman
With percussion and drums the deaf feel vibration. With reaction to instruments, they
will be able to decode rhythms within themselves.

JAM SESSIONS (daily at 10:30 pm – Satchmo Jazz Club)
Jam sessions will be conducted by Igor Bezget and Lenart Krečič. Every evening there will be a different group, which will open the session with four compositions. All musicians and listeners are invited.
CONCERTS (4 - 5 concerts in Maribor, Ljubljana and Koper)
Concerts and ensembles will be determined after all applications are received. Professors will invite students to collaborate. Suggestions from students are encouragged as soon as possible.
FINAL CONCERT: » THE EVENING OF MULTI DIMENSIONAL ARTS«
The final concert will be created under leadership of all professors at SNG Maribor. Feauturing Big Band with vocalists, we will have a chance to hear some ensembles and performance group of all professors. Jazz concert will follow the dance presentation.
